Our story began in a doctor’s office…our office. After 15 years as naturopathic physicians, it became clear that the demand for the kind of natural health care and advice we provide was vastly greater than the supply. Will full schedules and long waiting lists, we knew that we needed to find a way to bring the principles, the promise, and the products of naturopathic medicine to everyone.

What does UpWellness® mean?

Our founders are surfers with a deep connection to the ocean. An “upwelling” is an life-giving phenomenon in the ocean where currents cause warmer surface water to be replaced with nutrient-rich cool water from the depths. This nutrient infusion sustains the life at the surface and is the inspiration for our company name and tagline:UpWellness®: Nutrient-Rich Living.

The medical definition of a nutrient is: “A substance that provides nourishment that is essential for growth and maintenance of life”. Of course, when we think of nutrients, we think of substances in food…things like vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. But there are other “nutrients” that you need to live your best life… Physical activity, sleep, laughter, humor, relaxation, fun, intimacy, intellectual stimulation, books, music, animals, plants, kindness, respect, love, connection, compassion, coffee, chocolate (those last two are debatable but we think they work ;-). So, here at UpWellness®, when we say nutrient-rich living, we’re talking about all of the above. We define the word “nutrient” in the broadest possible way.
